Wolf in the Circle
A summoning gone wrong — and right
Explicit. Two adults, one bad decision.
Mara's hands trembled as she raised them, palms up, to the moonlit window. The words of the incantation spilled from her lips, a rhythmic chant that built in power and urgency. The candles flickered wildly, casting eerie shadows on the walls as the room seemed to darken. Her heart pounded in her chest, her breath coming in short gasps.
A blast of energy exploded from the circle, sending Mara stumbling back. She caught herself against the edge of her worktable, her eyes fixed on the figure that now stood within the charcoal lines. He was enormous, easily seven feet tall, with skin that seemed to shift and ripple like the moon's surface. His body was a mass of muscle, covered in a thick pelt of gray fur that seemed to glow in the candlelight. His face was a snout, sharp teeth bared in a snarl as he glared around the room.
Mara's mind recoiled, her heart racing with fear. This was not what she had expected. She had called for power, for success and recognition, not...not this. The wolf-man's eyes, a piercing yellow, locked onto hers, and for a moment, they simply stared at each other.
Rune's mind reeled, his senses overwhelmed by the unfamiliar sights and smells of this strange place. He had been running, chasing down a deer through the forest, when suddenly he was...here. Wherever here was. The memory of the forest, of the trees and the stream and the wind in his fur, was already fading, replaced by the acrid tang of incense and the flickering light of candles. He growled, trying to clear his head, but the sound came out more like a whine.
The human, a fragile, two-legged thing, cowered against a nearby surface. Rune's instincts screamed at him to attack, to defend himself against this potential threat, but something about the human's posture stayed his claws. She was afraid of him, he realized, and the knowledge gave him pause. He did not want to hurt her. He wanted to go home.
With a Herculean effort, Rune forced his body to stillness, his chest heaving as he struggled to calm his racing heart. The human watched him warily, her eyes wide with fear, and Rune felt a pang of regret. He did not want to be here, did not want to be a monster in this strange, cramped space. He wanted the freedom of the forest, the wind in his fur and the sun on his back.
Mara's voice was a thread of sound between them. "I didn't mean to summon you. I was messing around with some old books I found."
Rune's ears twitched towards her. He understood the words, though they were in a language he hadn't spoken in centuries. The forest had taught him many things in his long life.
He took a cautious step forward, his claws clicking on the hard floor. Mara flinched, but did not run. Rune halted, not wanting to frighten her further. He raised a hand, palm up.
"I mean no harm," he said, his voice low and rough from disuse. "I wish to return to my home."
Mara's eyes flicked to his face, then back to his hand. After a moment, she spoke again.
"I don't know how to send you back. I was just playing around. I didn't think it would work."
Rune's tail twitched with frustration. He had been afraid of this. The old magic was not to be trifled with, and he feared that this human did not have the knowledge or power to return him to his forest.
As he stood there, a thought occurred to him. This human might be able to help him, even if she did not know how to send him back. He took another step forward, his movements slow.
"Perhaps we can help each other," he said. "I have knowledge of the old ways, of magic and the workings of the universe. If you can find a way to return me to my home, I will give you this knowledge in exchange."
Mara's eyes narrowed, her gaze calculating. After a moment, she nodded.
"Okay," she said. "Deal. But you have to promise not to hurt me."
Rune bowed his head, his ears folding back. "I swear it," he said. "I will not harm you. I will do everything in my power to help you, and to earn my way back home."
As he spoke, Rune felt a sense of determination. He would find a way back to his forest, no matter what it took. And he would do it without hurting this human.
Mara nodded, a small smile on her lips. "I'll do my best to help you," she said. "But first, can I ask you something?"
Rune tilted his head, curious. "Of course," he said. "Ask me anything."
The human took a deep breath, her eyes locked on his. "What's it like, being a wolf?"
Rune's surprise was evident on his face. No one had ever asked him that before. Most humans saw him as a monster, a creature to be feared and reviled. But this one...this one seemed different.
He thought for a moment, searching for the right words. "It is freedom," he said finally. "The wind in my fur, the sun on my back. The forest is alive, and I am a part of it. I can feel the pulse of the land, the rhythm of the trees and the creatures that live among them."
As he spoke, Rune felt a pang of longing. He missed his forest, missed the feeling of being a part of something greater than himself. He hoped that this human could help him return to that life, to the freedom and joy that he had known for so long.
Mara's eyes were shining with wonder. Rune felt a sense of pleasure at being able to share his world with her. He took another step forward, his movements slow.
"Tell me more," she said, her voice barely above a whisper.
Rune smiled, feeling a sense of connection to this human that he had not felt in centuries. He would tell her everything, share all of his secrets and his knowledge with her. And in return, he hoped that she would help him find his way back home.
Mara leaned forward, her hands clasped together. "What do you miss most about your forest?" she asked, her voice low.
Rune's gaze drifted away. "Damp earth, green growth, the river flowing through the trees. The sun's warmth on my skin, the coolness of the shade."
Mara's face lit up. "I can see it. I can feel it. You miss the freedom, the wildness."
Rune nodded, his eyes snapping back to hers. "I miss being part of something greater. I miss the power and beauty of the natural world."
Mara's gaze drifted over him, taking in the broad shoulders and powerful build. "You're still part of that world. You still have that power and beauty in you."
Rune's eyes narrowed. "I am not the same here. I am trapped in this form, in this world. I am a danger to you and everyone around me."
Mara's face set in a determined expression. "I can help you. I can help you find a way back home. But you have to help me first."
Rune raised an eyebrow. "What do you need from me?"
Mara's eyes sparkled with mischief. "I need you to pose for me. I need you to let me capture your likeness on paper. And in return, I'll do everything in my power to help you find your way back home."
Rune's gaze drifted over her, taking in the curves and contours of her body. He could feel her heat, her pulse calling to him. He knew he should be wary. But he was drawn to her.
"Very well," he said finally. "I will pose for you. But you must promise me one thing."
Mara's eyes sparkled with curiosity. "What's that?"
Rune's gaze burned with intensity. "You must promise me that you will be honest with me. You must promise me that you will tell me the truth, no matter what."
Mara's face set in a determined expression. "I promise. I'll tell you the truth, no matter what."
Rune nodded, his eyes never leaving hers. "Then let us begin."
Mara's hands trembled slightly as she reached for her sketchbook and pencils. Rune's gaze followed her every move. He could feel her heat, her pulse calling to him. He knew he should be careful. But he was drawn to her.
As Mara began to sketch, Rune's eyes never left hers. He could feel the weight of her gaze, the intensity of her focus. He knew she saw him, truly saw him, in a way no one else ever had. And he felt a sense of pleasure, of pride, at being seen.
The room was silent, the only sound the scratch of Mara's pencils on paper. Rune's eyes never left hers. He could feel her heat, her pulse calling to him. He knew he should be careful. But he was drawn to her.
As the minutes ticked by, the tension between them grew. Rune's eyes burned with intensity. He could feel her heat, her pulse calling to him. He knew he should be careful. But he was drawn to her.
Finally, Mara looked up, her eyes sparkling with pleasure. "It's perfect. You're perfect."
Rune's eyes narrowed. "I am not perfect. I am a danger to you and to everyone around me."
Mara's face set in a determined expression. "You're not a danger. You're a guardian, a protector. You're a beautiful, powerful creature, and I'm honored to have seen you."
Rune's eyes snapped to hers. He could feel her heat, her pulse calling to him. He knew he should be careful.
Rune's gaze dropped to Mara's lips, and his mouth watered. He wanted to taste her, to feel her softness against his rough skin. His fingers twitched with the urge to claim her, to make her his. But he knew he couldn't. He was a monster, a danger to her and to everyone around her.
Mara's eyes never left his, her pupils dilating with desire. She could see the hunger in his eyes, the desperation. She knew he wanted her, and she wanted him just as badly. She took a step closer to him, her heart thudding in her chest. The sound of her own breathing was loud in her ears.
Rune's eyes snapped to hers, his gaze burning with intensity. He could feel the heat emanating from her, the pulse of her life force calling to him. He knew that he should be careful, that he shouldn't give in to his desires. But he couldn't help himself. He reached out a hand, his claws extended, and gently brushed a strand of hair behind her ear. The touch sent a shiver down her spine.
Mara's skin tingled with pleasure. She felt a rush of excitement, a thrill of fear. She knew that she was playing with fire, that Rune was a dangerous creature. But she couldn't help herself. She wanted him, and she was willing to take the risk. Her hand rose to his chest, her fingers tracing the curve of his shoulder.
Rune's hand dropped to her shoulder, his claws digging gently into her skin. He pulled her closer, his eyes burning with desire. Mara felt a rush of excitement, a thrill of fear. She knew that she was in over her head, that Rune was a force to be reckoned with. But she couldn't help herself. She wanted him, and she was willing to take the risk.
Their lips met in a fierce, passionate kiss. Mara felt a rush of excitement, a thrill of fear. She knew that she was playing with fire, that Rune was a dangerous creature. But she couldn't help herself. She wanted him, and she was willing to take the risk. Rune's tongue thrust into her mouth, his claws digging gently into her skin.
Their bodies pressed together, their hearts pounding in unison. Mara felt a rush of pleasure, a thrill of excitement. She knew that she was playing with fire, that Rune was a dangerous creature. Mara's fingers smudged the charcoal lines of the summoning circle as she stared at the space where Rune had stood. Candles had burned down to nubs, casting flickering shadows on the walls of her cluttered studio apartment. The scent of incense and turpentine hung heavy, punctuated by the distant hum of the city outside her window.
She dropped to the floor amidst scattered sketches and art supplies, her eyes drifting to a half-finished canvas. A sketch of Rune stood out, his eyes gleaming in the moonlight at the forest's edge. She had worked on it for days, trying to capture the essence of the creature who had captivated her.
Without thinking, Mara reached for a brush and began to paint. Bold, confident strokes guided by a force beyond her control filled the canvas. The world narrowed to the image taking shape before her.
Time lost meaning as she worked, the only sound the soft scratch of the brush against the canvas. It wasn't until dawn crept into the sky that Mara finally stepped back, exhausted but exhilarated.
The painting pulsed with a life of its own, as if Rune's spirit still lingered within the charcoal lines. Mara's heart ached with a mix of sadness and wonder as she gazed upon the image.
As the days passed, Mara found herself unable to tear her gaze away from the painting. She would sit for hours, staring at the image of Rune, wondering what had become of him. Had he found his way back to his forest, or was he still wandering the mortal realm, searching for a way home?
The questions swirled in her mind, refusing to be silenced. Mara felt a pang of regret, wishing she had asked him to stay. But she had known it was impossible - Rune was a creature of the wild, a guardian of the forest.
As the sun dipped below the horizon, casting the room in a warm, golden light, Mara felt a sense of peace settle over her. She knew that she would never forget Rune, that their time together would stay with her forever.
With newfound purpose, Mara turned to a fresh canvas, her brush poised and ready. The art that flowed from her was bold, vibrant, alive. It was as if Rune's presence had unlocked a deep well of creativity within her.
As the days turned into weeks, Mara's art gained her unexpected fame and fortune. Critics raved about her bold use of color, her ability to capture the essence of the natural world. Though she never forgot the creature who had inspired her, Mara knew that she had finally found her true voice.
But as she stood in her studio, surrounded by the trappings of her success, Mara couldn't shake the feeling that a part of her was still missing. She wondered what had become of Rune, if he had found his way back to his forest or if he still wandered the mortal realm.
And as she gazed upon the painting that had started it all, Mara felt a pang of longing, a sense of wonder at what could have been. She knew that she would never forget the wolf-man who had changed her life forever, and she couldn't help but wonder if their paths would ever cross again.
