The storm outside whispered to itself, a mist clinging to the city's skin. Miranda huddled in a doorway, her sketchbook a damp weight in her bag. The air felt thick, like a held breath.
She had been walking for hours, trying to outrun the latest rejection letter. "Unpolished," it called her, and the word sat sour in her mind. She kicked a loose stone, sending it skittering down the alley.
As she turned a corner, the buildings leaned over her, their shadows stretching like grasping hands in the flickering light. Miranda's heart jumped into her throat. She could have sworn she saw a dark shape watching her from the corner of her eye. She spun around, but the street was empty.
She walked on, but the feeling of being watched crawled along her spine. The alleyway narrowed, ancient brick seeming to absorb the faint light. Miranda's pencil scratched across the page, trying to capture the shadows that seemed to writhe like living things.
As she drew, a heat crept up behind her, like a warm breath on her neck. She spun around, but no one was there. Just the alleyway, the shadows, and a dark opening in the wall, a doorway leading down into the earth.
Miranda's heart pounded as she peered into the darkness. The air was warm and heavy, scented with age and secrets. Eyes watched her from the shadows, burning with an inner fire.
For a moment, she froze. And then, she stepped forward, into the darkness. The eyes drew closer, the heat washing over her like a wave. Miranda swayed, her senses reeling.
The eyes drew closer still, until she could see the shape of a horse's head, its eyes blazing like embers. Miranda felt a jolt of fear, but also a thrill of wonder.
For a moment, they simply regarded each other. And then, in a voice like distant thunder, the creature spoke. "Why have you come here, little one?"
Miranda swallowed hard. "I'm just an artist," she said, her words feeling small. "I'm looking for inspiration."
The creature regarded her, its eyes burning. "I can show you wonders," it said. "I can show you secrets that will inspire your art and set your soul on fire."
Miranda's heart pounded. What secrets lay hidden beneath the city? What would be the cost of uncovering them? She hesitated. And then, she stepped forward, into the darkness.

The scent of damp earth filled the air, mingling with something sweet and decayed. Miranda's skin prickled as the creature's eyes seemed to bore into her. She stood her ground, heart pounding.
"What do you want in return?" she asked, barely above a whisper. The creature's ears pricked forward, as if surprised by the question.
"Companionship," it said, its voice like the rustle of dry leaves. "I have been alone, trapped in these tunnels, guarding secrets no one else knows. I want to experience the world above, the sun on my back, the wind in my mane. I want to see the city, hear its sounds, smell its smells. And I want you to show me."
Miranda felt a mix of fear and excitement. What would it be like, to explore the city with this nightmare creature by her side? She thought of the wonders and secrets hidden in the city's streets and alleys.
But at what cost? She thought of her debts, her struggling art career, her fears and doubts. Could she trust this monster from her own subconscious?
The creature seemed to sense her hesitation. It took a step closer, its eyes burning. "I can show you wonders," it said again. "I can show you secrets that will inspire your art, set your soul on fire. And I can give you the freedom to create, to pursue your passion without debt holding you back."
The prospect made her heart race. To be free, able to create without worrying about bills. It was too tempting to resist.
"Okay," she said finally, voice firm. "I'll do it. I'll be your guide, your companion. But you have to promise me one thing."
The creature raised an eyebrow, ears perked forward. "What is that?" it asked.
"You have to promise me that you won't hurt anyone," Miranda said, heart pounding. "I don't want anyone to get hurt because of me, because of this bargain we're making."
The creature regarded her for a moment, its eyes burning. And then, in a voice like the rustle of dry leaves, it spoke. "I promise," it said. "I will not hurt anyone. I will be your companion, your guide, and your muse. And you will be mine."
Miranda shivered as the creature spoke. She knew she was taking a risk, making a bargain with a nightmare monster. But she had no choice. She was desperate, and this was her only way out.
"Okay," she said finally, voice firm. "Let's do it. Let's make this bargain, and see where it takes us."
The creature nodded, ears pricked forward in excitement. And then, in a graceful and terrifying movement, it reached out and touched Miranda's forehead with its muzzle.
Everything went black.
Here is the edited scene:
Miranda blinked awake in a cavern. Flickering light from an unseen source cast shadows on twisted rock and pulsing growths. The air smelled of damp earth and something ancient.
Nychtus stood beside her, its eyes glowing like embers. It nodded, encouraging her to look around.
They walked down the twisting tunnel, the only sounds the drip of water and the crunch of gravel underfoot. Miranda's mind spun with questions she couldn't ask.
The tunnel opened into a vast chamber, the ceiling lost in glittering crystal formations. The air tasted sweet and rotten. Pulsing growths on the walls seemed almost alive.
Nychtus watched her, curious and hungry. Its hoof closed gently around her wrist when she stumbled. Miranda felt afraid but the creature didn't threaten her, only held her.
They walked on, the tunnel shifting around them. Miranda's mind reeled, overwhelmed by the strange yet familiar world.
Nychtus's warm breath puffed against her skin. Its eyes gleamed, considering her. Despite her fear, Miranda felt a forbidden thrill at the impossible things she was seeing. She was alive in a nightmare.
