Monstrous Shadows

Mara confronts the changed Jonah

Explicit. Two adults, one bad decision.

Here is the line-edited scene:

The candle on Jonah's desk guttered, throwing monstrous shadows on the walls. Mara hesitated outside his door, her hand hovering over the brass knob. She'd known Jonah for years, but lately something was off. He'd been secretive, and those new heads he'd mounted, creatures she could swear she'd never seen before, they were just wrong.

She knocked softly, then pushed the door open without waiting for a response. The room was dark, and at first all she saw was the hunched shape of his back as he bent over something on the floor.

"Mara," he said, his voice a low rumble. "I told you never to come here."

"I know, but I was worried about you. You haven't been yourself lately."

Jonah stood up abruptly, turning to face her, and Mara gasped. His eyes glowed with an eerie, unnatural light, and his skin was stretched tight over his bones, giving him a gaunt, skeletal look. He moved towards her, his gait jerky and unnatural, and she took a step back.

"What's happened to you?" she whispered, her heart pounding.

"I died," he said simply. "And then I came back. But not all of me made it."

Mara's eyes widened as she took in the full horror of what he was saying. Jonah was dead, or rather, he was something more than dead, something that should not be possible.

"I need your help," Jonah said, his voice pleading. "I can't let anyone know what I am. I've been hiding out here, trying to figure out how to fix this, but I'm running out of time."

Mara swallowed hard, her mind racing. She'd always had a soft spot for Jonah, even when he was just a client, but this was beyond anything she'd ever imagined.

"Okay," she said finally, taking a deep breath. "Okay, I'll help you. But you have to tell me everything."

Jonah sagged in relief, and for a moment Mara could almost forget what he was, could almost see the man she'd once known in the twisted shape before her.

"I will," he promised. "But not here. It's not safe."

He ushered her out of the room, blowing out the candle as he followed her, and Mara could feel the weight of those wrong heads on the walls, watching her as she left.

Mara followed Jonah through the dark lodge, pulse thrumming in her throat. The wrongness of the place sank into her skin and she fought the urge to flee into the night. Jonah paused at the kitchen door, turning to face her.

"I know it's overwhelming," he said, voice low. "But I promise I'll keep you safe. You have my word."

Mara nodded, not trusting her voice. She watched Jonah's fingers shake as he unlocked the door. He ushered her inside and Mara couldn't help her sharp inhale at the state of the kitchen. Immaculate, every surface gleaming, and yet deeply unsettling.

Jonah caught her looking around, a wry smile tugging at his mouth. "I may be dead, but I still clean like a living man," he said.

Mara laughed, some of the tension easing from her shoulders. She sat at the kitchen table, watching Jonah move with eerie grace as he made coffee. His body flowed rather than walked and Mara couldn't help but stare.

"So," she said finally, trying to keep her voice even. "What exactly are we dealing with here, Jonah?"

Jonah paused, hand hovering over the coffee pot, and Mara could see the indecision on his face. Finally, he sighed, turning to face her.

"I'm not sure," he admitted. "I died and then I... woke up. But I'm not the man I was. I'm changed."

Mara waited, heart pounding as she braced for what he might say next.

"I can do things now," Jonah said softly, not quite meeting her eyes. "Things I never could before. The heads... they're just the beginning."

Mara swallowed hard, her mind spinning. She'd seen the heads, seen the wrongness, but she hadn't let herself think about what it meant. Now, with Jonah in front of her, she couldn't avoid it any longer.

"What do you want from me?" she asked quietly, voice trembling.

Jonah sighed, running a hand through his hair. "I need your help," he said finally. "I need you to keep this place running, keep people from asking questions. And in return... I'll help you. With your business. I have ways of making sure you never have to worry about money again."

Mara stared at him, mind racing. She'd always been practical, always looked for the logical explanation, but this... this was beyond her wildest imaginings. And yet, even as fear knotted her stomach, she felt a dark flicker of curiosity.

She wanted to understand Jonah's secrets. And if helping him kept her business afloat... maybe it was worth the danger.

"What do I have to do?" she asked finally, voice barely above a whisper.

Jonah smiled then, slow and dangerous, and Mara's heart raced. "Just say yes," he murmured, eyes glinting in the low light. "Say yes and I'll take care of everything else."

Mara took a deep breath, mind whirling, and then she nodded once. "Yes," she said softly, the word barely more than a breath. "I'll help you."

Jonah's smile widened as he turned back to the coffee. Mara watched him, heart pounding, wondering what she'd just agreed to. She had a feeling it was more dangerous than anything she'd faced before, but it was too late to turn back now.

She'd made her choice and she'd have to face the consequences, with Jonah by her side, man or monster. She'd have to find a way to make this work, to keep them both safe.

Because if she didn't... well, she didn't want to think about what might happen then.

Mara rummaged through the cupboards, pulling out a box of stale crackers and a tin of sardines. She set them on the chipped Formica with a sigh. "This is the best I can do. It'll keep your strength up."

Jonah shrugged, his shoulders moving beneath the worn flannel. "It's better than nothing. And I don't need to eat for sustenance anymore."

Mara frowned, popping open the tin and spearing a sardine with a fork. "You do need to eat to maintain your form. And I don't want you falling apart before we figure out how to make you human again." She held the fork out to him.

Jonah took the fork, his fingers brushing against hers. He chewed the sardine slowly, his eyes never leaving hers. "You're right. I need to keep my strength up if I'm going to be any help to you."

Mara busied herself with the crackers, trying to ignore the flutter in her chest. She told herself it was just the proximity to Jonah, the fact that he was the only other person here. But deep down, she knew it was more.

She couldn't deny the attraction she felt towards him, even though he wasn't fully human. There was something about his otherness that called to her, made her want to touch him, see if his skin was as cold as it looked.

As if reading her thoughts, Jonah reached out and took the cracker from her hand, his fingers grazing her palm. "Thank you. For everything."

Mara swallowed, her mouth suddenly dry. "It's the least I can do. After all, you saved my life."

Jonah popped the cracker into his mouth, chewing slowly. "And in return," he said, his eyes glinting with heat, "I'm going to save yours."

Before Mara could respond, Jonah pulled her into his arms, his mouth crashing down on hers. She melted into the kiss, her body responding to his touch. His hands roamed over her back, her hips, her thighs, pulling her closer.

Mara gasped as Jonah's hands slid under her shirt, his fingers skating over the sensitive skin of her lower back. She arched into his touch, her nipples grazing against his chest.

Jonah tore his mouth away from hers, trailing kisses down her neck, his teeth scraping against the sensitive skin. Mara tilted her head back, giving him better access, her hands fisting in his hair.

"Jonah," she breathed, her voice shaky with desire. "Please."

Jonah's hands slid to the front of her jeans, popping the button with a flick of his fingers. He tugged the denim down her legs, his hands skimming over her skin. Mara stepped out of her jeans, her legs trembling slightly.

Jonah's eyes roamed over her body, taking in every curve. "You're beautiful," he said, his voice rough with desire.

Mara blushed, a rush of heat flooding her cheeks. "You're not so bad yourself," she said, reaching for the hem of his shirt.

Jonah let her pull the shirt over his head, his eyes never leaving hers. Mara's breath caught in her throat as she took in the sight of his bare chest, the muscles rippling beneath his skin. She ran her hands over his chest, her fingers tracing the lines of his tattoos.

"Fuck," Jonah breathed, his hands tangling in her hair. "You're driving me crazy."

Mara smiled, a wicked gleam in her eye. "Good," she said, leaning in to kiss him again, her teeth nipping at his lower lip.

Jonah's hands slid down her back, cupping her ass and pulling her closer. He ground his hips against hers, his erection rubbing against her through the thin fabric of her panties. Mara gasped, her hands clutching at his shoulders, her nails digging into his skin.

"Please," she said, her voice breathy with desire. "I need you."

Jonah's hands slid around to the front of her panties. He tore the fabric away with a sharp tug, baring her to his gaze. "Fuck," he breathed, his eyes roaming over her. "You're so wet for me."

Mara blushed, a rush of heat flooding her cheeks. "Only for you," she said, her voice barely above a whisper.

Jonah's eyes locked onto hers, his pupils dilating with desire. "I'm going to make you come so hard," he said, his voice low and rough.

Mara's heart skipped a beat as Jonah's hands slid between her legs, his fingers tracing the curves of her pussy. She gasped, her body responding to his touch, her hips arching into his hands.

Jonah's mouth crashed down on hers again, his tongue tangling with hers as his fingers slid inside her. Mara's body tightened around him, her muscles clenching with pleasure.

"Jonah," she breathed, her voice shaky with desire. "Please, I need you inside me."

Jonah's hands slid out of her, his fingers tracing the curves of her hips. "I'm going to fuck you so hard," he said, his voice low and rough.

Mara's heart skipped a beat as Jonah's hands slid between her legs again, his fingers tracing the curves of her pussy. She gasped, her
