The scent of overripe fruit hung heavy in the air, sweet and cloying like honey. Ivy wove her way through the gnarled trunks, her boots crunching through fallen leaves and rotting apples, the drone of wasps a constant buzzing in her ears.
She had tried everything to save the orchard – pruning, watering, coddling the earth with her own hands – but the trees remained wilted and weary under the relentless heat. Now, as she approached the heart of the orchard, she knew it was time to confront the presence that lurked within the oldest tree's twisted boughs.
Ivy stopped at the base of the ancient tree, its trunk as wide as her armspan. She placed her hand on the rough bark, feeling the thrum of power that hummed beneath her palm.
"Elder," she called, her voice trembling. "I know you're there. I can feel you."
For a moment, nothing happened. Then, the air around her began to shimmer and warp. The shadows within the tree's depths seemed to deepen and stretch, coalescing into a figure that stepped out from between the roots with a sound like the creaking of ancient wood.
He was tall, his form a patchwork of bark and leaf, of earth and stone. His eyes glowed with the green of new growth, the brown of rich soil, the silver of moonlight on water. He looked at her, and she felt as though he was seeing straight into her soul.
"What brings you to me, little one?" he asked, his voice a rumble that seemed to echo through the earth itself.
Ivy took a deep breath, trying to steady her nerves. "The orchard is dying," she said, forcing the words out past the lump that had formed in her throat. "I can't save it on my own. I need your help."
Elder tilted his head, considering her with those ancient eyes. "And what makes you think I have any interest in helping you?"
She swallowed hard, her heart pounding like a drum in her chest. "Because this is your home too," she said, desperate now, the words spilling out in a rush. "Because you've been here longer than I have, longer than my mother or her mother before her. Because I can feel you in the earth beneath my feet, in the air I breathe, in the blood that runs through my veins. Because I am part of this place, just like you are, and I don't want to see it die."
For a long moment, he was silent, his gaze unwavering upon her face. Then, slowly, he began to smile, his teeth white and sharp against the dark of his skin. "You are a brave one, aren't you?" he mused, taking a step closer to her, the scent of loamy earth and green leaves wafting from his form. "To come here, to confront me, to beg for my aid. Most would have fled long ago, left this place to wither and die."
Ivy stood her ground, though every instinct screamed at her to run. "I'm not asking for myself," she said, her voice steady now, the fear giving way to a new kind of fire that burned in her belly. "I'm asking for the orchard. For the land that has been in my family for generations. For the trees that have sheltered and nourished us, that have given us life and sustenance and joy. I'm asking because I love this place, and I can't bear to see it suffer any longer."
Elder's smile widened, and she could see the glint of something old and wild in his eyes. "Love," he said, the word a caress on his tongue. "Yes, I can taste that in you. The sweet, heady flavor of devotion, of dedication. Of desire."
He reached out then, one long finger tracing the line of her jaw, the touch like the brush of leaves against skin. Ivy shivered, her breath catching in her throat, a sudden flush of heat blooming beneath her collarbone.
"What are you willing to give," Elder murmured, his voice a whisper that seemed to twine around her like vines, "to save what you love?"

The words danced at the edges of her awareness, "to save what you love? What price would you pay, to see your orchard bloom once more, to feel the earth beneath your feet thrive and grow?"
Ivy's heart stuttered in her chest, a wild, fluttering thing caught in the snare of his words. She met his gaze, those endless, earth-colored eyes that seemed to hold the secrets of the land itself, and in them she saw her reflection, the ghost of an orchardist with dirt-stained hands and a desperate, yearning heart.
"I—" The words tangled in her throat, caught on the thorns of her fear and the sweet, sharp temptation of his offer. "I don't know what you're asking of me."
Elder's smile unfurled slowly, like green leaves in the spring sun. "Oh, but I think you do, Ivy. I think you've known it since you first set foot in this orchard, since you first tasted the fruit of your ancestors' labors. You're bound to this land, to its history and its future, and you would do anything to see it flourish."
His fingers drifted lower, tracing the curve of her neck, the pulse that fluttered beneath the skin. "I'm offering you a bargain, a promise. Give yourself to me, to the land, and I will give you everything you desire. I will make this orchard grow, I will fill your trees with fruit and your heart with joy, and all I ask in return is you."
Ivy's breath came short and fast, her body thrumming with a hunger she'd never known before, a need that ached in her bones. She thought of her family, of the generations that had tended this land, and she thought of the years ahead, the endless stretch of seasons that could be filled with life and abundance.
She thought of the price he asked, the sacrifice he demanded, and she knew it was not a choice at all, but a surrender, a giving over of herself to the wild, untamed magic of the land and the ancient being that guarded it.
"I—" She swallowed, her voice like dust on her tongue. "I accept. I give myself to you, to the orchard. I—"
Elder's smile unfurled like roots spreading through soil, the spread of leaves against the sky. He leaned in close, his breath warm against her ear, and whispered, "Then let us begin."
His lips brushed against her skin, a touch like the kiss of sunlight and shadow, and Ivy felt the world fall away beneath her feet. She was falling, falling into the earth, into the heart of the land itself, and as she surrendered to the embrace of the orchard's keeper, she knew that she would never be the same again.

She closed her eyes, the scent of the orchard filling her nostrils, and knew she would never be alone, that she would always be a part of the land, and the land would always be a part of her.
Elder's fingers trailed down Ivy's spine, the pads of his fingertips tracing the curve of her vertebrae. Her breath caught as his touch danced across her lower back. She felt his heat radiate against her skin, a warmth that seeped into her bones.
